What Are Greenhouse Gases?

Global Climate Change (16)

“Gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect include: Water vapor (H20), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N20), Chlorofluorocarbons.” (NASA. Global Climate Change. Vital Signs of the Planet).

Note from the author: Isn´t it strange how water vapor (H20) is a contributor to climate change? A chemist could probably explain this to us who do not understand why exactly this is the case. Another very interesting fact is that AGRICULTURE is the 3rd (or, fourth, depending on the way we calculate) largest sector contributing to greenhouse gases (which warm our planet), following the energy sector and transportation. Industry is one big player as well. This is why transforming our global energy market into a more sustainable one is so essential. When our energy markets are transformed, other sectors will follow, as a more or less natural consequence. With the research I have conducted in the past years, I have found out that hydroelectric power (which is quite common e.g. here in Finland), is not really a sustainable solution either, despite of being called “a sustainable energy source”. The problem with hydroelectric power is that it changes the natural course of e.g. rivers, and thus affects the natural fish stock in a country where it is widely applied. Anne-Maria Yritys 2017.

Anthropogenic i.e. Human-Caused Climate Change

Global Climate Change (15)

“Human-caused climate change: Majority of climate scientists agree the main cause of the current global warming trend is human expansion of the “greenhouse effect” – warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space”. (NASA. Global Climate Change. Vital Signs of the Planet).

“European Commission: The EU has long been committed to international efforts to tackle climate change. At European level a comprehensive package of policy measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has been initiated through the European Climate Change Programme (ECCP).”

Climate Change Education Must Be Increased

Global Climate Change (13)

Paris Agreement 2015/Art. 12 “Parties shall cooperate in taking measures, as appropriate, to enhance climate change education, training, public awareness, public participation and public access to information, recognizing the importance of these steps with respect to enhancing actions under this agreement.” (United Nations 2015. Adoption of the Paris Agreement).

Mobilization Of Climate Finance Important To Tackle Climate Change

Global Climate Change (12)

Paris Agreement 2015/Art. 9. 3 “As part of a global effort, developed country Parties should continue to take the lead in mobilizing climate finance from a wide variety of sources, instruments and channels, noting the significant role of public funds, through a variety of actions, including supporting country-driven strategies, and taking into account the needs and priorities of developing country Parties. Such mobilization of climate finance should represent a progression beyond previous efforts.” (United Nations 2015. Adoption of the Paris Agreement).
