If you are lucky enough to run a business without having to spend any time or money on any kind of marketing efforts, for instance if you already have a permanent, reliable clientele, make sure to hold on to the good customers and clients you already have! It takes a lot more time and effort to acquire new, good clients than serving those you already have very well. No other social network except for Twitter allows for your business to connect so freely and openly with businesses and people from around the world. Furthermore, Twitter Inc. distinguishes itself by the fact that everything you post on the social media platform is public, unless you for some reason have decided to protect your Tweets to be seen by your followers only.
As a part of your business marketing strategy, your business must be present on Twitter. There is no other social media platform comparable with Twitter, which allows for your Tweets to be found and indexed by search engines. Furthermore, anything you post on other social media platforms, such as Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and WordPress, can be automatically shared to your Twitter feed, saving you tons of effort and time since you do not have to re-post everything manually.
Moreover, there are several social media software companies, including Social Jukebox, that allow for you to automate your marketing by either sharing already available content or creating and sharing your own content. With a rapidly increasing number of companies using some form of artificial intelligence (AI), such as big data automation, predictive/prescriptive analytics, machine learning, expert systems, neural networks, interactive voice response technologies, and avatar technologies, in their business models, artificial intelligence is forecast to disrupt all industries. Franklin Wolfe writes in How Artificial Intelligence Will Revolutionize the Energy Industry, a special edition on Harvard University ́s blog on August 28, 2017, artificial intelligence and the energy sector are becoming more and more interconnected, whereby choosing a career path in either of these sectors does not necessarily signify excluding the other. Phil Goldstein, on the other hand, writes in his article in BizTech on October 25, 2017 that AI can support the energy industry in many ways: in improving energy efficiency, predicting possible blackouts and failures, and even support human beings in detecting completely new sources of energy.
According to technology research and advisory firm Gartner, 85% of all customer interactions will be managed without a human by 2020. Global Energy Business BP already explores how performance in the oil and gas industries can be improved with the help of artificial intelligence. According to technology expert Walker at BP, AI algorithms i.e. processes are about to transform how BP optimizes its operations.

Methane, a powerful greenhouse gas which today accounts for at least a quarter of all anthropogenic climate change, has many different sources. The largest human-caused methane source is enteric fermentation, the digestive process in the animal farming industry, followed by oil and gas production, landfills, rice cultivation, wastewater, other agricultural sources, coal mining, agricultural manure, biomass, and stationary and mobile sources of anthropogenic methane emissions.
Stationary and mobile sources of methane being released into Earth’s atmosphere through human activity refers to combustion practices, with these accounting for an estimated one percent of other than natural methane activity on Earth. It is a byproduct of burning fossil fuels and organic matter in order to transform these into energy and heat.
According to the GMI (Global Methane Initiative), which is part of the United States Environmental Protection Agency EPA, there will be a 15% increase of human-caused methane emissions by 2020. Moreover, according to EPA/GMI, methane mitigation (projects) include many benefits for the overall (global) environment, not only in terms of reducing excess odors, but also in terms of minimizing anthropogenic methane emissions which are at a large scale responsible for the greenhouse effect and climate change on Earth since industrialization.

Each year on March 8th, International Women´s Day is being celebrated worldwide. Some men have asked, why women must be celebrated? Why do men have no International Men´s Day? Should we rather ask why we actually need an International Day for Women?
The purpose of International Women´s Day is to remind us all of the fact that we are yet far from having reached gender equality. Women across the world must get their voices heard. Due to many different reasons, including culture, tradition, legislature etc., many countries/societies across our globe prevent women from having the same opportunities in life as men.
What we all must understand is that empowering women through women´s birthright, Universal Human Rights, that apply to both genders, we contribute to developing a sustainable global economy, where all human beings have equal access e.g. to education and to workforce (and, a profession of their choice/level of education, knowledge and skills), narrowing down gender gaps and transforming societies to become less gender oriented.
According to research and statistics, girls and women that have equal access to primary, to secondary, and even to higher education give birth to fewer children. Not that children would be unwanted in our world, but when girls and women are economically empowered through education and through an unlimited access to the global job market/have the possibility of practicing their learned profession/becoming entrepreneurs, it has multiple beneficial effects upon societies, including better health for both women and children, and less poverty. In our overpopulated world with too many children suffering from hunger, malnutrition and poverty, it is important for parents to have the opportunity of raising healthy children which ultimately will lead to healthier economies and societies.
By giving girls and women equal opportunities and allowing females to access their basic human rights, economies and societies worldwide empower and help women to be capable of taking care of, not only their own futures, but the futures of their children equally.
What can you do as a man to help and to support an equal economy? There are countless ways of empowering girls and women, starting within the close family system/relatives/your community. Learn more about the worldwide facts regarding gender equality. Integrate gender equality into your daily life at home, at work, in your community. Understand that empowering girls and women will benefit men as well, when responsibilities are distributed equally within homes, and in working environments.
What can you do as a girl/as a woman? There is no simple response to this question, since the state of equality between genders varies from country to country. I could write, learn and be aware of your (human) rights as a girl/woman, but it is not that simple taking into consideration that currently not every girl/woman is aware of their Universal Human Rights. How can you empower yourself to take action for improving your life as a girl/woman if you are unaware of your basic human rights? However, those girls and women who are aware of their basic human rights should claim access to those fearlessly, empower themselves and other women to become active citizens of the world to make their voices heard and contribute to an increasingly much democratic world where both men and women can live up to their full potential as equal human beings.

What kind of country do you live in? Are you living in a developing economy, or in a welfare state? Or, in a transitory state? Or, in a failed state? If in a failed state, you are most probably not even capable of reading this post, since a failed state is a) either in some sort of crisis (e.g. war) or b) not allowing its citizens to surf the Internet, or even participate in social networking, and social networking/professional business sites, such as LinkedIn.
Market fundamentalism is out, as is belief in comprehensive state interventionism. (Gylfason & al. Nordics in Global Crisis. Vulnerability and resilience. 2010. 20.)
Whichever kind of state you are living in, it is worthwhile noticing that your state, including its governance and legal aspects, have a major influence upon the economic development, and possibilities, for the country’s citizens. Many citizens in countries, feeling unempowered, believe they have no influence upon their surroundings. This, however non-empowering it may sound, is a false belief. Every citizen has a voice, and the possibility of influencing the economic, and thus societal, developments in their country.
In Welfare States, including Finland (situated in Northern Europe) the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008, often compared to the Great Slump of 1930 ́s (or even worse), and the economic events of the past years, together with the current economic situation both on micro and macro levels, intertwined with estimates and forecasts for the future have certainly given many, not only economists, but in general citizens of the world food for thought.

Many countries have been hit hard by the crisis, and have not yet recovered – including several small, open economies, vulnerable to, and severely affected by, global developments. However, some of the shocks were internally created, leaving some of the responsibility of “cleaning up the mess” to domestic institutions, and policies. (Gylfason & al. Nordics in Global Crisis. Vulnerability and resilience. 2010. 21).
Coe, N., Kelly, P., and Yeung H.W.C. Economic Geography: A Contemporary Introduction. 2007, have discussed the role of different kinds of states and firms in the economy, with a purpose to pinpoint how these, together with supra-national institutions, shape economic processes. The discussion about the changing role of the state in an era of globalization, together with the demonstration of why geographical scales matter when re-configuring a state, is also out of most relevance.
A state has several functions:
– A state is the guarantor and institution of economic activities dealing with financial crisis, guaranteeing national economic instruments, securing international economic treaties, property rights and the rule of the law.
– A state is the regulator of economic activities such as market regulation, and the regulation of economic flows.
– A state is the architect of the national economy, including trade policies, strategic industrial policies, attractor of FDI (foreign direct investment), and regional development policies.
– A state is an owner of public enterprises.
– A state is the provider of public goods and services, such as infrastructure, healthcare, transport, and education.
– A state has also political-economic influence upon mergers and acquisitions, through regulatory control.
– On a geographical scale, a state plays a role in international, macro-regional, intra-national, and local levels.
The vast amount of different types of states existing today is divided into:
– Neoliberal states (North America, Western Europe, and Australasia).
– Developmental states (Asia and South America).
– Transitional states (Eastern Europe, Russia, China, Southeast Asia).
– Welfare states (Nordic countries and some European countries).
– Weak and Dependent states and
– Failed states
In a reconfiguration of the state, following can be taken into consideration:
– A State is a dynamic set of institutions.
– The nation-state is a dynamic entity capable of self-transformation
– Rise of corporate power and global finance
– A nation-state is powerless in controlling inward and outward investments, or is it?
– The political-economic geographies, together with the mutually dependent relationship between state/firm
– The different power-relationships between states within the global economy
– The interaction between states/firms/markets.
– Nation-states shape profoundly the economic activity within and across their borders.
– The state itself is always implicated or involved in directing processes through conscious decisions.
– Nation-states remain critical institutions through which international, regional, and local economic issues are evaluated and acted upon.
– Economic governance on international and sub-national scales, upscaling: international organizations such as UN, IMF, World Bank, and WTO, together with macro-regional groupings such as the EU, APEC, NAFTA, ASEAN, NEPAD, SAARC, CARICOM, and MERCOSUR.
– Hollowing out the state = state functions taken over by public-private partnerships and private forms of regulation QUANGO = Quasi-Autonomous Non-Governmental Organizations
– Leading business media Beyond the State?
– State control is uneven in its operation and effectiveness
Traditional welfare states, such as Finland and Sweden, have not avoided the global crisis, the reasons for which include the level of openness, and the dependence on exports of investment goods. Both Finland and Sweden experienced an equally severe slump in the early 1990 ́s with the difference that it was at large homemade. Lessons learned from the 1990 ́s crisis include that early signs of financial fragility need to be taken seriously, and policy planning needs to base upon worst-case scenarios. The current crisis, still ongoing, includes problematic consequences: public finances have deteriorated, unemployment is high, and significant structural changes in the economy are taking place. (Gylfason & al. 2010. 21; 118).
Restoring public finances can be taken care of in many ways, as suggested by Gylfason & al. (2010. 28):
– Public consumption and transfer payments can be cut
– Composition of expenditure directed in a growth-friendly way
– Smooth flow and functioning of infrastructures, including communication
– Well-functioning education system and funding of research
– Broadening the tax base by raising the employment rate
– Changing the structure of taxation in a way that encourages economic growth, i.e. reduction of taxes on productive economic activity, corporate and labor taxes, and an increase in taxes on consumption, natural resources and real estate.
Due to globalization, the mutual interdependence between countries is stronger than ever, suggesting that there is a need for stronger international, and global, cooperation in areas including trade policy, financial regulation and supervision, macroeconomic policy and actions to prevent climate change. (Gylfason & al. 2010. 31).
However complex policies are, the maintenance of a welfare state, and economics, includes the following:
– A democratic system with equal rights and possibilities for all citizens
– A solid infrastructure in terms of access to services such as education, and healthcare
– A balanced economy, with little deficits
– A lucrative, innovative environment attracting FDI and sustainable economic growth
– A taxation policy attracting firms, which in turn create jobs and employ citizens
– A taxation policy that is attractive for all kinds of firms, including small enterprises
These are measures that, in a welfare economy, are expected to be taken care of by the state, and therefore, through public policies. Firms, on the other hand, choose to operate and invest in markets capable of offering them attractive conditions, and an optimization of factors included in a PESTLE analysis.
However important the role of the state, or a nation, a state is always being constructed by its citizens. Citizens who have the possibility of influencing their direct and indirect surroundings, including their personal lives, their neighborhoods, the politics of their country and so forth. In fact, every single action, and every single effort made by an individual in a country, has direct and indirect impacts upon the developments in the nation in question.
Thus, your personal efforts, however small they may seem, always do have an impact upon the society you are living in. Never underestimate your capability of influencing, changing, and developing society and people around you, because often, small actions and improvements lead to giant leaps and changes in (economic) development.

MBA Career Stories was written in co-operation by 33 MBA´s from around the world as a networking and marketing project, in order to develop intercultural communication. My story:

Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, Helsinki, Finland
I graduated in 2012 from Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki, which is one of Finland´s leading business schools. The reason for selecting this program was because of the great opportunity to choose free elective courses from other universities. Personally, I also took some courses from Aalto University, and participated in overseas courses at San José State University, the capital city of Silicon Valley, California, USA, and the Faculty of Economics at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The program was quite extensive, as I studied more free electives than necessary. Beside my MBA studies, I completed two investment courses/exams at Aalto University. The core program was pretty much standard, including courses in quantitative/qualitative research methods, project management, and talent management.
As free electives I chose to take quite many strategic management courses, a couple of change management courses, including business ethics and CSR. The course in Silicon Valley included international marketing, mass media, PR and communication, and innovation management. Quite a package in two and a half years, and I worked full-time throughout my studies in retail banking – it was an intense period.
Previous to the MBA I had been working in the hotel, restaurant and travel industries for a decade after my Bachelor´s Degree in Hospitality Management in 2001. In 2007, I changed careers into banking, and wanted to expand my knowledge from being an expert within hospitality, into learning more generally about international business management. I am satisfied about this decision, since this has given me more options and possibilities in business life.
I have until this day found the MBA useful in at least the following aspects:
– Increased confidence and trust in my own capacity/knowledge
– Improved networking skills
– Improved presentation and public speaking skills
– General increase of knowledge and knowledge creation
– If knowledge is not directly available, I know how and where to find it
– A strategic and holistic view upon business and life in general
– A better understanding of the big picture of how society and different industries and businesses function
I was a fairly critical thinker already before the MBA, but today I am even more critical in terms of putting things into a perspective. The MBA also enhanced my analytical skills.
After graduation, I worked as an investment manager in a small, private investment firm for about a year. I noticed it wasn´t what I wanted in a longer-term, so I left the company.
At the moment I am working as a freelance business consultant, and I am available for (a) new assignment(s) and/or a permanent role e.g. within change and strategy consulting.
The MBA definitely opens up many new doors. The degree increased my appetite for continuous learning, development and improvement not only of myself as a person, but in how I see organizations and different business areas.
My advice for other MBA´s:
– Work hard to reach your goals
– Never give up
– Believe in yourself
– Be open for different options
– Be innovative
– If you are not ready to be an entrepreneur, become an intrapreneur
An MBA can pursue many kinds of careers in business life. Everything depends upon yourself, your motivations and areas of interest. You can start your own business, join a startup, advance your career in a medium-sized or large organization – whatever suits you best. The most important, however, is to remember to be a responsible leader/manager.
Take care of yourself mentally and physically, treat other people fairly, listen to people and be open for feedback. Know yourself and your values, and live according to them. Enjoy life – career is important, but it is not everything. Try to lead a stable life. If you notice something doesn´t seem or feel right – you can always change direction.
I also wanted to test the usefulness of LinkedIn as a networking tool, and how it would help me in finding business opportunities. This eBook project is one of the steps I have taken to progress my career.
I think it is beneficial to have a wide experience, but real professional progress requires determination and focus. Since the world changes with such a fast pace today, it is of course good to be open for continuous change. Today, careers are not necessarily linear, so basically it is useful to always have a plan B, perhaps even a plan C, in case the original plan doesn´t work out. With many decades of work life ahead of me, I want to continue making good decisions and keep on learning and developing throughout my life.
