When marketing your business online/on social media, it does pay off to do your homework before engaging in/wasting your precious effort and time on useless activities. PLANNING before execution, as many digital/online marketing strategists would say. Unless, of course, you enjoy spending a lot of effort and time online just for the sake of commenting, engaging, sharing and learning. After all, we do learn best from our failures and mistakes, but actually taking the time to research how digital/online marketing actually works may save you from a lot of head ache and wasted time.

If your digital marketing efforts are not yielding any results or wants to improve its results, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What is your business doing online?
  2. What is your business selling?
  3. Where is your business offering its services?
  4. How can your business best reach its customers online?
  5. Which digital/social media channels does your business need to be present on to achieve optimal results?
  6. Who/what could help your business achieve its digital/online results, and improve these?
  7. How does your business measure its social media ROI?
  8. How will your business target its segment/s and find/be found by its (potential) customers online?
  9. What can your business learn from its mistakes?
  10. How can your business benchmark, i.e. learn from other businesses/share experiences?

How To Protect Your Brand Online?

As a small business owner, an entrepreneur or if you are self-employed, you must be prepared to protect yourself online. You MUST set clear boundaries in terms of what kind of approaches and behavior you are willing to accept from people/businesses approaching you online. It is no different from how businesses and people would behave and approach potential clients offline, except from the fact that many businesses and private persons have forgotten about any kind of etiquette or business rules online.

When building your online presence and while branding and marketing your business online, you must be prepared to protect yourself and your brand identity. Of course, every brand wants to be loved, but there are clear differences between love and obsession. Since I have personally been targeted by tens and hundreds of (online) stalkers, I want you to have the tools and the knowledge to prepare yourself for the unexpected, and to learn how to protect yourselves and your brands from unwanted attention. While having to protect myself and my brand from unwanted attention, I spent months on reading about the topic. Recently, I found following interesting article written by Alex Lickerman M.D. and published in Psychology Today:

Read the above article to learn more about the topic, just to be able to protect yourself better both offline and online, and, especially online.

I know this from a personal experiences, with a decade of experience and hundreds of thousands of contacts and followers on social media in almost every county worldwide: I have been a target many times, by people obsessed with my brand image who want to move in with me and occupy my whole life without even knowing me on a personal level.

You do not have to learn everything the hard way, like I had to do: blocking people who constantly harassed me, threatened my life etc. Although social media allows us to use completely new tools to make ourselves known, there are strict limits to what is legal and not, even online. For instance, if a person does not respond to your constant messages online, blocks you on social media, why do you keep stalking them? However much you may love a brand, you must learn how to love yourself first and let go of any obsessive need for trying to control other people, their brands, and their businesses, especially when your exaggerated behavior is harming them.

How to Brand Your Business Online?

Before branding yourself/your business online, including Twitter Inc., make sure to understand what branding signifies. What is a brand? Is it a logo? Is it a business card with your name and your logo printed on it?

A BRAND is a personal and/or business image with certain values. It is definitely NOT only the visible logo of your business, or the printed text on your business card. Being a brand is recognizing your core values, and actually living and communicating those values to your clients. Without any core values, a business or activity cannot exist. A brand with its values should clearly express your business morals and ethics and be at the core of your business strategy, communicating at all times the mission, vision, and purpose of your business. Before launching a new business, make sure to define your core values which will be your guiding principles around which you will build your business.

Successful branding requires for you/r business to:

 

  • Define clearly what you/r business values are/what you want to accomplish with you/r business activities
  • Communicate your brand to your clients in a captivating way
  • Believe in your brand image and its sustainability. If you do not believe in your brand, who else do you think will do so?
  • Why should anyone do business with YOU?
  • What makes you stand out from the rest?
  • The amount of effort and work you are ready and willing to invest in communicating and engaging your “audience”, i.e. existing clients, prospects, other stakeholders.
  • How adaptive is your brand to changes?

 

 

How transformable/adaptive to change you are:

In today´s world, the survival of a brand depends not only upon its ability to react to external changes, but also how well it mirrors the needs of consumers and their preferences.

A brand also has to have credibility and be capable of winning clients´ confidence in order to thrive and to move forward.

Instead of stagnating as a brand, focus upon providing your clients with quality work/products, great customer experience/service, caring about your clients, and engaging your clients in various ways. Ask your clients what they want, what they need, and be willing to deliver tailored solutions. Or, create demand for the services you offer.

Branding is essential for any individual, and business, regardless of size.

Branding is about communicating your/your business identity to your clients/potential clients.

Twitter Inc. is an excellent communications platform and branding tool, since:

 

  • You can rather easily reach and build an international/global community and find customers in your target market
  • Twitter is inexpensive! Most tools are free of charge, unless you want to turbo-charge your business growth e.g. through Twitter advertisements

Twitter branding/marketing is efficient, but you/r business must invest either TIME or MONEY (or, both) to ensure brand recognition on Twitter.

Unless you personally have the time (AND, patience!), consider hiring a professional/team of professionals/a social media marketing expert to take care of the work for you. Make sure that you know the terms and conditions of their service, and that you can rely upon the content they are sharing on your behalf. As a small business owner, you can also create and use your own content, and share it through a content management service such as SOCIAL JUKEBOX.

In essence, branding is you/r business, identity. What you and your business stand for, and how well you integrate your identity to all of your business practices/personal activities.

Think about some of the largest, most expensive and best known brands in the world. What are the secrets behind their success?

ALL successful brands have started from zero, and managed to brand themselves. If they can do it, so can you!

Every person/business has and is a unique brand. Not everyone aims to become the largest in their industry – it is a question about what you are willing to work towards, and to achieve.

Your brand identity could be about creating the most unforgettable, tailored travel experiences to your clients (e.g. a specialized travel agency, or a hotel). It could also be that your business is about helping your clients solve various business-related issues, e.g. regarding business expansion into new markets (market entry consultancy).

Your brand identity is defined by what you/your business is about, what your expertise is, and how passionate you are about the products/services you are offering your clients. And, how your services differ from those provided by others. Expertise, customer service, you name it!

Why are you online, on social media? To “socialize” with friends and family? Or, to make new friends? If you are an entrepreneur and a business-owner, your main reason for being present on social media is for your business to be found online, right? And, not only to be found, but to be found for the right reasons, and by the right people! In order to be found for the right reasons and by the right people online, your online presence must focus upon the right activities. Here are a few tips for being found online, and to drive more traffic to your website:

  1. Create a website. For many business owners, your website will be the number 1. place where you interact with your online customers. Unless, of course, you are trading directly on some other platform, such as Amazon. Nevertheless, a business website is a great way of letting your customers know what your business is doing, and what kinds of goods/services it is offering.
  2. Create quality content. What is quality content? Quality content can be defined as content that not only satisfies your website visitors/potential customers, but that is also helpful to them. The worldwide web is today a huge marketplace: customers love brands and businesses that make a difference by educating, helping, and inspiring their customers.   3. Driving (the right kind of) traffic to your website. Marketing is at the core of any business´ success. You can have the best content in the world, but if no one finds your business, you will soon be out of business!

So, how can you drive more traffic to your website? First of all, ask yourself these questions: WHY do you want more traffic to my website? WHAT are you offering to your (potential) clients? HOW will you do this? WHERE is the traffic coming from? HOW do you drive the traffic to your website?

WHY do you want more traffic to your website? Well, very few bloggers/business owners live from traffic only! Nevertheless, creating your website on WordPress, which is one of the most visited and used websites by businesses worldwide, is simple. You can do it for free, or choose between different, affordable plans. With a professional or business plan on WordPress, you can apply for WordPress WordAds which lets you monetize your website easily. WordAds is an ad program managed 100% by WordPress, which lets you focus upon what is essential instead of finding advertisers by yourself. However, if you are a leading expert in a specific field, you may have advertisers/sponsors that are willing to work with you directly.

WHAT are you offering to your website visitors and (potential) clients? What makes you special, and stand out from others? Very often, your idea does not have to be, or will not even be, much different from competitors. You just have to be YOU: unique, and focusing upon your expertise. With the information overload on the Internet today, the better you can differentiate, the more likely you are going to succeed with your online business. Remember: not everyone is your customer. Make sure to focus upon what is essential, and try to find your segment, and your market. There is plenty of market out there: billions of people use the Internet every day. Learn how to use these, or, hire someone to help you with it. You can use a number of social media channels and integrate these into your website on WordPress, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, Google+. If you are a Vlogger, make sure to integrate your videos to your WordPress website, and then also share them on other social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. For instance Twitter is a great way of driving traffic to your website through link-building. Other ways include Google AdWords and PPC marketing: just make sure to learn the techniques, or find a professional who knows how to optimize your web traffic through paid search engine marketing!

FINALLY: Affiliate marketing, or relationship marketing. If an when you have the necessary contacts or the courage to find the necessary contacts, you can benefit from relationship marketing: the best way to succeed is most often helping others to succeed! Online relationship marketing can be done for instance by co-operating with professionals who have common/shared interests with your business (goals). Cooperating with others, for instance through guest-blogging and sharing other professionals´ content in an equal give-and-take relationship, you can build an (online) business based upon relationships. For many (small) entrepreneurs, this is definitely the most efficient way, especially if and when you are outgoing and a people-oriented person. If not, why not try affiliate marketing? This is something you can do both as an extrovert, and an introvert. You can benefit from affiliate marketing by either promoting your own products, or the products/services of others (in case you do not yet have your own products).

Online Networking is a Phenomenon that really has just started to reach its stride (Ivan Misner) 

The reasons for online networking, networking on social media, and especially on the world´s largest professional networking platform, LinkedIn, should by now be realized by every serious business professional, without the necessity for further argumentation or debate about why, or for what purposes. With more than 400 million professional users globally, LinkedIn is today the world´s leading communications, branding and online marketing platform for businesses and organizations in every possible industry. Regardless of business activity and industry, LinkedIn has plenty of possibilities to offer. Even Hillary Clinton, 2016 Presidential Candidate in the United States, has been selected as an official LinkedIn Influencer and uses LinkedIn as one of her personal branding, communication, and influencing channels in the presidential campaign.

Some of the core reasons why EVERY business professional, and business leader, should have a LinkedIn profile and invest time and effort into benefiting from the many possibilities LinkedIn does offer for its users:

  1. LinkedIn is the world´s largest, most widespread professional networking site. 

LinkedIn is by far the largest and most actively used network for professionals in all possible industries. Launched in 2003, LinkedIn has grown and expanded rapidly in every corner of the world, having more than 400 million professionally qualified users as per today. The company went public in 2011, and is today traded on the New York stock exchange (LNKD).

  1. LinkedIn is the Number 1. Networking platform for creative knowledge workers and talent. 

Especially favored by online advertisers, online marketers, headhunters, recruiters, job-seekers, LinkedIn does in fact offer a number of benefits regardless of industry, or geographical location.

  1. LinkedIn has opened gateways and become a channel for finding new clients, business partners, and much more, in a number of creative ways. 

If not yet realized, you as a business professional and business leader should by now realize that LinkedIn, in fact, offers a vast amount of solutions that in fact do reduce costs, and the need of traveling for business. Where, and how else, could your business so easily find new potential customers in targeted markets and segments, if not on LinkedIn? Online networking, finding and generating new leads through existing and potential direct contacts, has in fact already replaced cold-calling. And, as a matter of fact, LinkedIn offers the possibility of getting in touch with people and professionals that would otherwise most probably be out of your (business) reach. With a vast global network, I have personal experience from this, and the fact that LinkedIn does reduce the amount of cold-calling that sales professionals have to do.

  1. LinkedIn Publishing enables everyone to become an Influencer

Publishing content, articles, posts, and thus influencing through your content marketing and management is today possible for every LinkedIn user. To learn more about publishing content on LinkedIn, please feel free to either contact me personally for additional information, or, read LinkedIn´s instructions to learn more about how to publish articles on LinkedIn, and how to get your posts featured in one of LinkedIn´s official channels. Highly recommended feature for every business professional, even for job-seekers, or simply for businesses and organizations that wish to use LinkedIn as one of their preferred channels for online content marketing, lead generation, and (free-of-charge) advertising for their business. It is not even necessary to upgrade in order to publish on LinkedIn, and you can use the same content for your blog(s), and for your business´s/organization´s official website. And, there is no need to publish in English if your target market is elsewhere. LinkedIn supports a number of languages, and in addition to the supported languages, you have the option of choosing which language you would like to publish content in. Très simple & très effectif!

  1.  LinkedIn groups.  

LinkedIn offers its basic members to join a maximum amount of 50 groups, and if you are a premium user, the amount of groups you can join is even higher. And, you can create your own groups! In case you have a business, or quite simply if you are a job-seeker, you can create (a) personal group(s) that are aligned with your professional activities, and interests. As an example, I have personally created two groups on LinkedIn: Around Online Media in 180 Days, and Leading With Passion.
