What to Consider When Branding Your Business Online

What are some of the most important things to consider when branding your business on social media? As I wrote in my previous post, How To Market Your Business Online?, it is important for any business to do some planning before executing your social media branding and marketing strategies, although the global digital and social media landscape evolves and changes all the time. Therefore, continuous learning and improvement play an essential role in regarding to your brand strategy. Some things, however, can and should remain rather fixed in terms of (online) branding. Why is that?

A brand´s perhaps most important and valuable asset includes an IPR portfolio, consisting of the total brand experience throughout a certain amount of time (i.e. to showcase the brand´s work throughout the years). Although brands do and should change and evolve throughout time, since we have to regard a brand as a living entity, at the core of a brand and its strategy are its values. The core values of a brand determine much of how a brand operates on its markets, and these should be well communicated throughout the entire organization, regardless of its size.

How well your brand communicates and lives up to its values will play a critical role in how your brand will succeed on the market. Before launching a new brand, make sure to think about and to determine your brands values. Then, build your business around these values and make sure to communicate these values throughout any business activities and processes.

It does not matter if you are a small business owner or a Fortune 500 company/brand: the essence of branding applies to businesses and organizations of all sizes and in all economic geographies. Instead of communicating and marketing simple products and/or services, make it your goal to communicate and to market your brand strategy and its values. At its core, remind yourself and your business every day that ultimately everything is about trust and longevity. A brand idea can be built in a day, but it requires constant work and effort to maintain and to develop the brand. In today´s digital markets, many brands have to rethink their operational activities. What worked ten years ago has changed, and what works today may not work in a decade from now.

Why should you be marketing your business on Twitter? Why should you be marketing your business at all? If you are lucky enough to run a business without having to spend any time or money on any kind of marketing efforts, for instance if you already have a permanent, reliable clientele, make sure to hold on to the good customers and clients you already have! It takes a lot more time and effort to acquire new, good clients than serving those you already have very well. After all, that is what we all want (to provide): Reliable, excellent quality service to customers that hopefully love to spend their money and time on our products and services. Therefore, make sure to hold on to your best customers!

Word-of-mouth marketing works extremely well even in the digital world that we live in. In fact, word-of-mouth marketing may have become more important than ever as the word spreads fast online. Make it your number one rule when building your online brand presence to make a good lasting impression on your (potential) clients. Make reputation management an essential part of your online marketing strategy.

Although Twitter Inc. currently has less users worldwide than for instance Facebook, Twitter Inc. with its hundreds of millions of active users has for years already been among the top 10 most visited websites. No other social network except for Twitter allows for your business to connect so freely and openly with businesses and people from around the world. Furthermore, Twitter Inc. distinguishes itself by the fact that everything you post on the social media platform is public, unless you for some reason have decided to protect your Tweets to be seen by your followers only.

As a part of your business marketing strategy, your business must be present on Twitter. There is no other social media platform comparable with Twitter, which allows for your Tweets to be found and indexed by search engines. Furthermore, anything you post on other social media platforms, such as Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and WordPress, can be automatically shared to your Twitter feed, saving you tons of effort and time since you do not have to re-post everything manually.

Moreover, there are several social media software companies, including Social Jukebox, that allow for you to automate your marketing by either sharing already available content or creating and sharing your own content. Which, in turn, allows for you to build and use backlinks to drive more traffic to your website. How to Brand Your Business Online?

Before branding yourself/your business online, including Twitter Inc., make sure to understand what branding signifies. What is a brand? Is it a logo? Is it a business card with your name and your logo printed on it?

A BRAND is a personal and/or business image with certain values. It is definitely NOT only the visible logo of your business, or the printed text on your business card. Being a brand is recognizing your core values, and actually living and communicating those values to your clients. Without any core values, a business or activity cannot exist. A brand with its values should clearly express your business morals and ethics and be at the core of your business strategy, communicating at all times the mission, vision, and purpose of your business. Before launching a new business, make sure to define your core values which will be your guiding principles around which you will build your business.

Successful branding requires for you/r business to:

 

  • Define clearly what you/r business values are/what you want to accomplish with you/r business activities
  • Communicate your brand to your clients in a captivating way
  • Believe in your brand image and its sustainability. If you do not believe in your brand, who else do you think will do so?
  • Why should anyone do business with YOU?
  • What makes you stand out from the rest?
  • The amount of effort and work you are ready and willing to invest in communicating and engaging your “audience”, i.e. existing clients, prospects, other stakeholders.
  • How adaptive is your brand to changes?

 

 

How transformable/adaptive to change you are:

In today´s world, the survival of a brand depends not only upon its ability to react to external changes, but also how well it mirrors the needs of consumers and their preferences.

A brand also has to have credibility and be capable of winning clients´ confidence in order to thrive and to move forward.

Instead of stagnating as a brand, focus upon providing your clients with quality work/products, great customer experience/service, caring about your clients, and engaging your clients in various ways. Ask your clients what they want, what they need, and be willing to deliver tailored solutions. Or, create demand for the services you offer.

Branding is essential for any individual, and business, regardless of size.

Branding is about communicating your/your business identity to your clients/potential clients.

Twitter Inc. is an excellent communications platform and branding tool, since:

 

  • You can rather easily reach and build an international/global community and find customers in your target market
  • Twitter is inexpensive! Most tools are free of charge, unless you want to turbo-charge your business growth e.g. through Twitter advertisements

Twitter branding/marketing is efficient, but you/r business must invest either TIME or MONEY (or, both) to ensure brand recognition on Twitter.

Unless you personally have the time (AND, patience!), consider hiring a professional/team of professionals/a social media marketing expert to take care of the work for you. Make sure that you know the terms and conditions of their service, and that you can rely upon the content they are sharing on your behalf. As a small business owner, you can also create and use your own content, and share it through a content management service such as SOCIAL JUKEBOX.

In essence, branding is you/r business, identity. What you and your business stand for, and how well you integrate your identity to all of your business practices/personal activities.

Think about some of the largest, most expensive and best known brands in the world. What are the secrets behind their success?

ALL successful brands have started from zero, and managed to brand themselves. If they can do it, so can you!

Every person/business has and is a unique brand. Not everyone aims to become the largest in their industry – it is a question about what you are willing to work towards, and to achieve.

Your brand identity could be about creating the most unforgettable, tailored travel experiences to your clients (e.g. a specialized travel agency, or a hotel). It could also be that your business is about helping your clients solve various business-related issues, e.g. regarding business expansion into new markets (market entry consultancy).

Your brand identity is defined by what you/your business is about, what your expertise is, and how passionate you are about the products/services you are offering your clients. And, how your services differ from those provided by others. Expertise, customer service, you name it!

Why Should Your Business Be on Twitter?

For most small business owners and entrepreneurs, Twitter Inc. is definitely one of the most important social media sites to create your brand presence. Why is that? Why not focus only on for instance Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram or YouTube?

There is no other social media platform comparable with Twitter. Twitter has for years been among the top ten most visited websites worldwide. Regardless of its stagnation in terms of amount of users worldwide, Twitter is the easiest place to connect with brands, celebrities, businesses, and professionals of interest.

Not only can Twitter be used as a means of customer service, but also as a general external communications channel, a branding tool, a marketing tool, a pr tool: the amount of purposes Twitter can be utilized for is almost countless. Of course, be careful about sharing any sensitive business/other data on Twitter, unless you/r company has no secrets at all! After all, in today´s knowledge economy, managing information and sharing knowledge openly in networks/with different stakeholders can be a competitive advantage rather than a mere threat to your business.

Use Twitter as a part of your social media marketing strategy: integrate it into your website (on WordPress), from where you can automatically share posts to your various social media sites, including Twitter. If creating and posting videos on YouTube, you can also easily share these on Twitter to promote your ideas/content. Moreover, you can use Twitter to engage your audience and drive more online traffic to any website through the usage of backlinks.

Regardless of the amount of activity on your business Twitter account, make sure to be present and share what your business is about. Connect with your target audience, engage them, and make your Twitter timeline a unique place for them to visit by sharing relevant information/posts related to your business/industry.

Twitter as a Publishing Platform

Twitter, with its more than 500 million users worldwide, celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2016. Last year, according to a number of media sources, Twitter was struggling with its break even. Some sources claimed, Twitter would be at the end of its course, while the keen supporters of Twitter kept tweeting, sharing, re-tweeting, liking and favoring content shared by an X amount of users on a daily basis.

Why should you/r business use Twitter as a publishing platform?

Twitter is continuously improving its performance by developing its tools, i.e. becoming an increasingly much important platform for sharing news. Although the number of fake accounts may be large (number unknown), Twitter is PUBLIC, unlike Facebook, LinkedIn, and many other social media networks. Unless, of course, you/your business/organization decides to protect Tweets (run a protected account). Furthermore, Twitter allows you/your business to share up to date media, news, articles, content etc. publicly to the whole world, available to anyone through a simple Google (or, another search engine) search, unlike many other social media sites where the potential customer first has to sign in/register, and has to search your content in order to find it. On Twitter, B2B branding and marketing is kept simple – just make sure to follow your target audience, or make them your followers/brand ambassadors.

Twitter has integrated its own video service, Periscope, where you can film your content and share it directly to viewers on Twitter (and, to anyone who may be interested in your content). No need to upload/share lengthy videos from YouTube anymore, unless, of course, you prefer to cross-share – upload videos on YouTube and share them on Twitter. Unfortunately, according to my personal experience, Periscope is yet quite uncommon among Twitter users, many of whom may prefer not to record live videos. Although, sharing videos is something we all should do, according to relevant social media research, stating that online video material will rise above any other shared content (i.e. written posts, images). For some reason, most of us still seem to have a huge problem with filming, and sharing recorded videos online. Perhaps we are too shy? Well, the markets always have pioneers. Get rid of your fears to share video recorded content – today´s branding and marketing is more about involving clients than impressing them. People like surprisingly strange content – make sure to be yourself, find your niche and find the right customer through segmented marketing efforts, and by involving your (potential) customers. Perfect is not always what customers are seeking – instead, make an effort to be original and different. Depending upon your industry of course.
